It's a Sheffield ting

The weekend just gone found us boarding the National Express coach for a lovely trip to Sheffield. The two days in the field were lovely but the journey up there less so - the stench and the heat was like being smothered in a pissy pillow. But despite the uncomfortable travel arrangements, we went up to catch a slice of Rough Disko party action.

Scratcha DVA and Martin Kemp were the big names on the bill. They both slayed it with plenty of bass bin bothering business, funky and tropicala. Predictably it resulted in another late night somewhere in High Storrs...

The next day involved relatively wholesome activities based around meat, house viewing and beers. Top conkers? Top conkers...

Sean's heart attack in a bap. Google that.

Again some of the tunes were almost too much but were more ghetto than the usual business we expose oursens to in the smoke. Perhaps we're not going to the correct parties...

And this woozey number from Deadboy - big fucking tune...

Sheffield party boys

While we're off galavanting around the capital, the Rough Disko flag is flying possibly even stronger and stranger than ever up in Sheffield. Now at the Harley, the Gag Reflex and the London Wicker have thrown together some sharp suited and well booted parties to the Steel City night. Below we have Isa G from London hype merchants, Girlcore, and Potty Mouth main man Scott Cooper.

Jac the Disco are on in a few weeks - get the mixes offa their myspace here...

We Wear The Gold

Sheffield club nights C90 and Rough Disko have been dilly-dallying for time, attempting to outdrink and outnerd each other via arm wrestles, epic binges, meat eating competitions and heated debates on the pros and cons of Dj Funk and whether his wardrobe is too fresh.

So it’s no surprise that after all this flirting, the pair of floozies have decided to jump into bed with each other, have a frig and tumble and show the world the resulting mess they made. Out of the shadows comes We Wear The Gold, an evening of booty and bass. This is what these cretins listen to when no one else is watching. The first one is Friday March 27th at the Stockroom in Sheffield. Check it.

Even better they’ve put together a pair of mixtapes to showcase what flex they’re saying. Noisy stupid club music.

The first one from the Gag Reflex is you can download here. The mysterious Derek Tibbs' masterwork can be found here. Get on these free loads.

Rex the Dog

During 2005 and 2006 I used to drive an old Volkswagon Polo around Sheffield. Like that one in the picture. It was unfortunate that the car died a premature death while I was working as a stage manager at the Leadmill. During the 12 hour Sunday shift (which was fucking awful by the way) some rotter nabbed the bastard. It was found burnt out on the Parkway about a week later and I had to pay for its disposal.

One positive aspect to the whole ting was I’d manage to remove my cassettes from the vehicle before it was looted. One such tape was an electro - disco remix put together by Rough Disko resident, Gag Reflex. We used to drive around blazing crop on the way to the off license with this tape ramped up to eleven for the best part of 12 months. I used to drive everywhere just so I could listen to this freaky tape.

Anyhoo one of the songs on there was Prototype by Rex the Dog. Out on Kompakt the first time round, it’s a ridiculously over the top piece of rave-musik and sparked off a lorry load of Chinese whispers about who da Dog actually is or was. Like the gaggle of nerds we are, we spent yonks discussing the possibles.

Nearly 4 years later Rex the Dog is eventually about to re-release his debut album. One of the launch parties was at the Star of Bethnall Green a mere ten minutes around the corner from our London gaff. We discovered that far from being Carl Craig or a member of Kraftwerk the Dog is a greasy Euro-trance looking type of dude who would still be stealing your beak during the after-after-after party and waking up on your sofa on Monday covered in piss. Disappointingly the mystery is over. But Prototype is still amazing. Check it.

Rough Disko was last night...

But here's the flyer/poster for it. This kind of lateness is almost a parody of Peter Saville and Factory records. Almost. Now at the Harley by all accounts last night's RD was a great success...

Check out what's happening in Sheffield on the RD front here...

Movement and Vibe

The last few months have been a blur. Big tings have gone down with the main one being upping sticks in Sheffield and heading down to the capital.

In between times we’ve been to the Bestival festival, narrowly avoiding trench foot and raising bloody hell amid the mud bath. The highlights almost too numerous to mention. Dancing in torrential rain wearing a rizla parka chanting ‘Fuck the Rain’ was a particularly strong look.

Rough Disko tottered towards its 4th Birthday in typical fashion. The delightful DJ Mowgli proved his worth both behind the decks and as an eating machine at the Ethio-Cubana restaurant in Sheff. Here’s a selection of candid shots, showcasing how we’ve been rolling…

Rough Disko and a bite

We threw another Rough Disko party at Penelopes in July - It was a ‘residents special’ which translates in promoter terms as ‘we’re skint and we can’t afford any guests’.

However, in this case it was pretty sweet to get the chance to flex a bit of musical muscle from behind the decks. And it went off in a satisfying manner. One of the best moments was when the 'party bus' arrived at 10.30pm with a gang of revellers in tow. It stops off at various places around Yorkshire, transporting piss heads to various locations in search of good times.

This group of shitfaced teachers waltzed in, demanded the new Chris Brown single, smashed a glass and then fucked off. I was glad to see them go.

We’re throwing a series of monthly parties from October. Keep those peepers peeled for line ups…

Afterwards we celebrated by getting on a ketamine tip. It’s an experience which has punctuated the summer like an occasional equine-based bomb blast to the brain. It’s pretty disorientating and results in the user reverting to a child-like state. It is meant for horses so I guess this is unsurprising.

The next eve we missed the C90 party with DJ Rupture due to a bbq engagement in Beighton. It was a delightful experience until a gang of marauding slugs bum-rushed the show. One minute there weren’t any around - the next a whole tribe had started to get jiggy with the burgers. It was unfortunate I’d reached the stage of wolfing down a steak sandwich fresh off the grill. My fragile state of mind led to me believing that the bap I was sticking in my wobbly gob wasn’t stuffed with lovely, fragrant meat - but a gang of hungry slugs. Cue food popping back into mouth, cue little bit of sick in hand, cue giving oneself a talking to. Topping that Jeff bit me.

It hurt.

Raving - this guy was here before we opened the doors and danced around like a loon til the end. Props.

DJ Mossadon in Sheffeeeel

Oh oh here’s a bit of business on what’s been happening Sheffield style people…

We threw a bash last month with electro DJ Mossadon who journeyed all the way down from York for the June Rough Disko freak out. Go (RIP) were responsible for the beautiful flyers and we snuck around Sheffield in the weeks before like a trio of slobby wolves brandishing these pretty promotional tools at anyone who’d listen and many who didn’t. The street team even braved the tie-die wearing, poi throwing and chick pea gobbling hippy fest that was Peace in the Park to try and spread the legs of the vibe even further…

Unfortunately the attendance was sub-sub-sub-low but big up to Mossadon and brother in arms Def Stef for taking the time to do their thang down at Penelopes.

Here’s the eye candy for youse - didn’t quite catch Mossadon in full bass wobble but you can see the sweat and tears outside. The despair was translated into the half litre bottle of Teachers that’s been hanging around my flat since Zombie Disco Squad rejected it back in December. Some people have no taste…

May Rough Disko post mortem

Right right let’s get to it. The last party was a right fucking jump off, if not a red hot sausage fest.

That’s right the music went SKONKN K NKNKN BBBBBBIOIOI, then flexed its muscles before punching you between the legs and tweaking yer balls/cameltoe.

Boys loved it, so did a few girls, and many ladies hated it. However, that me ducks is the way we fucking roll.

Props to Mr Oris Jay for properly slaying it, whoop whoop to the C90 dicks for sticking their fingers in our pie again and to anyone who ventured down. It.Was.Good.

Here are some pics from Penelopes to show how big and bouncing it was. Check out Mary Anne Hobbs offa Radio 1 who was in the area for her birfday. We didn’t get her anything.

Radio 1 in da AREA! avec beaux - marvel at the fun she's having

Rough Disko vs ORIS JAY (aka DARQWAN) vs C90 @Penelopes, Friday May 16th

Here's the vibe for our next party. It's this Friday coming and should be one off the top shelf...

Rough Disko present - The Bass Off Part Deux

Who with -
ORIS JAY (aka Darqwan) Planet Mu/Sheffield/Texture
C90 DJS (fops around town)
ROUGH DISKO RESIDUAL DRINKERS (Gag Reflex , The London Wicker, Jimpotent)

When? - Friday 16th May
When is the ring open? - 10.30 pm til 4 in the am.
Tax? - to you friend, 4 nicker
Vibe? This time it’s personal…

Oi oi Sheffield, it’s been a long time no see scenario since our bad selves last got entangled with the heat and sweat of the disco night. After smashing it back in February with the C90 boys (respekt respekt) at Penelopes for a rumble which was reet and royal, we retreated into the darkness to sharpen our rave claws and polish the buttons on our jackets woven from the dankest of hype.

It’s May time and now we’re gearing ourselves up for another descent of deep, down and dirty digital dance floor action. The movement bounced and bumped so hard in February that we couldn’t resist bringing back fellow piss heads, the C90 ladies for a rematch in this, the first of a trio of early summer parties….

However, to ensure the do really does go off at the deep end, we’ve drafted in one of the big dons of bass pressure to bring some fire power to the riot. This time we welcome bleepy garage hero, Sheffield’s very own ORIS JAY.

Local hero Oris is a well respected member of the dance music fraternity, both under and over ground. Weaned on pirate radio and illicit sound systems, he’s one of the early warriors of the dubstep scene, emerging through the early days of jump up and now standing tall as a purveyor of wobbly synthesised two step, garage, bleep and rave.

His name and shadow stretches far outside of Sheffield. Having forged a top 40 hit with his tune ‘Trippin’, he’s collaborated with everyone from Ms Dynamite to Rodney P, released tracks labels including Polydor, Tectonic, Planet Mu, EMI, Bingo, Storming Productions and Hospital and featured on Nitin Sawhney’s Fabric Live compilation and Freq Nasty’s Breakspoll CD…

Oris tore Sonar in two last year and did some serious damage at the Bloc weekender back in March. You’re as likely to hear his riddims at a Warp party in Spain as they are raising the roof of a Nova in Pittsmoor, Sheffield. Armed with his mixture of dubstep, techno and electronics, he will bring this rave crashing in on itself with the emotional TNT he charges those turntables. We’re very excited indeed…

Check these for more vibe…

Rough Disko vs C90 The Bass Off - Feb 15th @Penelopes

Gag Reflex cracks a smile and nearly cracks the lens... heavy

The baying hoardes wobbling

Look at this dubstep loving sore - Rich C90 in the midst of the dancefloor meltdown...It's so big he can barely keep his tongue in his mouth...

The bass off in full effect...

Jeez louise - it's been ruddy ages since I last grappled with my typewriter and updated this ere blog up - I've been slack make no mistake...

The past few weekends have been full of naughtiness. Leave work on a Friday hellbent on staying up forever on some sort of chemical quest to find the chosen land (i.e bed) via a few cinematic classics (e.g Tremors, The Warriors) and a good old rant about vegetables.

Here for your delight are a few images from the Rough Disko party we through a couple of weeks back. We did get to bed via a debate on the merits of cauliflower cheese. The next day we visited a curry house where they sold you poppabombs, a savoury starter which resemble soggy rice crispies too fat for your gob.

Rough Disko Vs C90 in THE BASS OFF @ PENELOPES FEB FRI 15TH

While I'm at here's detail of our next Rough Disko party, this time with our fellow bass loving party hounds C90. Check out their vibe here

ROUGH DISKO PRESENT - THE BASS OFF
Where - Penelopes, Sheffield
When - Friday, February 15th
What - 10.30 while 4
Damage - £4

The malignant ROUGH DISKO beast lumbers into 2008 with a new party for your ears and feet, at the scene of December’s nocturnal crime PENELOPES…
This time bring a spare of pants - we’re throwing up THE BASS OFF for a heavy sound clash featuring Sheffield’s electronic and beer loving hounds, C90...
December saw the ROUGH DISKO Djing/gymnastic team display aerobics both on the floor and behind the decks. The wonk levels were jacked up to 98 with help from South London’s finest purveyers of crunking electronics dragged straight from the gutter, ZOMBIE DISCO SQUAD. Props to those mothers for bringing some proper plastik to the chaos…

After spazzing it up domestic style over the NY, February sees us back on the nightime road and welcoming our compadres C90 to the bash. Cut from a similarly demented electronic bent as ourselves, these mothers started holding parties for the same reasons we got embroiled. Cos Steel City night’s can be tuff when no other fun freaks are licking the same pole as you, you mother…

They’ve put on parties with a wide array of guests - Digital Mystikz, DJ Scotch Egg, Boombip, Fog, Rob Hall, Maga Bo, Neil Landstrumm - from such a sparkling array of musical madness you can imagine what sort of sickness they’ll be bringing - all manner of batty bass from dubstep, minimal, bleep to glitched up grime and beats.

Couple that with the Rough Disko team (cut to JIMPOTENT, GAG REFLEX and THE LONDON WICKER since BOB FUNKHOUSE’s sad departure to the smoke), purveyors of electro, house, bassline, house, techno, ghetto tech and booty shaking business and you’ve got a twisted meeting of night-time beams, two crews willing to push each other over the edge into bass fuelled chaos…. Bring on the bass…

YES YES ONLINE SPACE here we go, here we go - I’ve been crafting wordy tings for a while for various publications - FACT, STOOL PIGEON, SANDMAN SHEFFIELD TELEGRAPH, have been just some of my avenues/victims so getting blogstatic seemed like the next appropriate avenue from which to vent forth a spleen located nowhere near the fast lane.

Expect missives erratic and irregular on host of tings - mainly raving, swearing, drinking and the club nights and live gigs we put on and frequent…

I’m part of a collection of fools who put together our electronic club night ROUGH DISKO which can be as erratic and hit and miss as we are - We get drunk and play stonking electronic bangers we love to people who enjoy wrecking their heads as much as we do…

Here’s a link to Rough Disko’s obligatory Myspace - we’ve been operating for 3 years on our own bank defying terms throwing dos and Djing when we’ve got the impetus and a new set of tunes that’ll make it worth your while turning up and checking us…

What evs tho bevs, that’s all by the by…First log on here so to speak is a big up to a Sheffield’s future star, the wee man with the beefy beats who’s firmly riding the 'zeitgeist' aka 'bassline' aka 'club tackle that the North has been bouncing on for time but now London's found out' about. Steel city batty boy, TODDLA T has the hype firmly between his legs...

I’ve been privy and pleasured to doing a few blurbs for the boy as he slowly soars out of our orbit and into the big league. The photo above charts the latest haul I received from him for a big up for his agent (minus the wedge which evaporated a long time ago)...

Check it - that’s my reward for serving up Sheffield golden boy wonder with his latest hunk of word quiche and you’d better believe those verbs sizzled like his batty does.
As a brucey bonus, the scamp sorted us with a promo of the latest Craig David single - that’s a twisted sort of love which don’t come for free…

We caught the train down to Fabric last weekend to check him make his main room debut at the place as part of Sinden's Get Familiar soiree. Predictably he socked it to them. Herve aka The Count, dropped a horrible beast which had parts of Papa Roach’s Last Resort in it. Too much dude, too much…

I was gonna get some shots of inside Fabric but the disappointment of the night crossed with my fear of losing everything I owned meant the lens stayed in the bag.

Instead check out the boozer we went to the following night in Miles End. In the background there's a covers 'band' playing what a mucker described as the most lonely music in the world. The dude in the bottom left of the picture was a dwarf with a passion for stalking ladies round the pub while supposedly on glass collecting duties.

While we were outside taking down a snout, a local came over and told us "it's nice to be nice" after we'd just ingested the remnants of our weekend and were beginning to lose the plot on a massive scale. Much, much more fun than Fabric...
